The Sheriff's Department is responsible for keeping everyone in the court house complex safe and secure.  All persons entering the complex are screened for weapons and contraband via walk through and hand-held metal detectors at each entrance to the complex.  X-ray machines scan all packages, briefcases, and handbags in Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties.
In and around the complex, the sheriff's officers enforce laws, maintain proper decorum, and address public safety concerns.  Inside the complex, sheriff's officers monitor security and safety of public areas and hallways.
Sheriff's officers are posted within court rooms and are responsible for overall security of court rooms and the safety of the judges, staff, and users of the court.  All sheriff's officers are trained in first aid, cpr, and some are qualified as emergency medical technicians.
The sheriff's department is also responsible for security, custody, and control of prisoners during their appearance in court and transporting incarcerated defendants to and from court.
The Public Defender's Office represents indigent persons who are charged with serious criminal offenses.  This office also employs investigators, attorneys, and staff.
