Welcome to the New Jersey Courts On-Line Self-Help Center. The services offered here include general information about representing yourself in court, what the court can and cannot do for you, contact information, brochures, forms and kits. The New Jersey Judiciary prepared these materials for individuals who choose to represent themselves in some legal matters. (Someone who chooses to represent himself or herself in a court proceeding is often referred to as pro se which is a Latin term that means for self.)

| Divorce - LSNJ's Divorce in New Jersey: A Self Help Guide | ||
Getting a divorce in New Jersey can be complicated. The New Jersey Judiciary does not have a divorce kit for self-represented litigants. Howevery, the Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) offers a guide with forms that explains how to file for divorce or dissolve a civil union based on irreconcilable differences, separation, desertion or extreme cruelty. The guide text is available on-line for free. LSNJ offers the forms for order for a nominal fee, and offers free copies to those who meet certain income criteria.

In addition, some of the county courthouses have law libraries/self help centers with reference materials relating to divorce. Every vicinage has an Ombudsman who is available to answer questions from the public about court programs and services. In the Judiciary, the ombudsman is a neutral staff person who answers questions, addresses concerns from the public and is responsible for enhancing customer service in the courts. The ombudsman provides a bridge between the courts and the community, to enhance public access and improve customer service. Although the ombudsman is unable to provide legal advice - because court staff must be neutral and impartial - the ombudsman can help guide court users through the system with as much ease as possible. To find out if the county you live in has a Judiciary Law Library/Self Help Center or to ask other questions, you may contact the local Ombudsman. |
