Judiciary Rolls Out Online Juror Response System

New Jersey residents summoned for grand and petit jury service can answer their summonses online at judiciary.state.nj.us/juror, Judge Glenn A. Grant, acting administrative director of the courts, announced today.

The Judiciary's online option gives jurors 24-hour convenience, does not require postage, and allows jurors to print a record of their online response.

"The Judiciary knows and appreciates the valuable time that jurors give to ensure fair trials," said Judge Grant. "The online juror response system is one way we can make jury service easier and more convenient for those who are summoned to serve as representatives of the community."

The online system also helps the Judiciary improve the efficiency and accuracy of a jury system that issues approximately 1.3 million summonses each year. The program reduces the handling of paper documents, eliminates some data entry because jurors' data are transferred electronically into the existing jury management system, and reduces costs to store paper records.

Those jurors who need to submit documentation to verify a request to be excused or disqualified for jury service still must use the paper system at this time. The Judiciary will continue to work on improvements to the system to enhance convenience and efficiency for the public.

First introduced in July 2010 in Atlantic and Burlington counties, the new jury response system was implemented statewide in October 2010.

The Judiciary recently surveyed jurors about the online option. Jurors reported that they liked having an online option and that it was easy to use. One juror commented, "It was easy and I appreciated being able to do this online." Another noted, "Nice improvement over the last time." The Judiciary will consider jurors' comments as it looks to further enhance, and perhaps expand, the online response option.
