PRESS ADVISORY - REPORTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS INVITED
New Technology Coming to Burlington County Superior
Court
Burlington Assignment Judge John A. Sweeney will introduce JEFIS,
the Judiciary Electronic Filing & Imaging System, on Monday,
Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 4A on the fourth floor of Courts
Facility, 49 Rancocas Rd., Mount Holly. Supervising Judge Michael
J. Hogan will join Judge Sweeney in a demonstration of the program.
Beginning Feb. 28, attorneys and litigants can use the JEFIS electronic
filing system in Burlington in the Special Civil Part, where the
court addresses cases concerning debt collection, lawsuits and
contract actions seeking damages up to $15,000. Special Civil filings
in Burlington increased 13 percent, from 12,214 in court year 2003
to 13,838 in 2004. An additional five percent increase is projected
for this year.
“We are strong supporters of technology in the Burlington
Courts and we believe this tool will increase our case processing
speed and efficiency and allow us to keep up with ever-increasing
caseloads,” said Judge Sweeney. He credited Civil Presiding
Judge Marc M. Baldwin and Supervising Judge of the Special Civil
Part Michael J. Hogan for their support of this initiative.
“Electronic filing saves money for attorneys, their clients
and for the taxpayers by reducing the need to handle and store
paper,” said Jude Del Preore, Burlington trial court administrator. “JEFIS
is convenient and efficient. Paperless electronic files can be
available simultaneous to judges, court staff, attorneys and the
public.”
Burlington is the sixth county to join JEFIS, a pilot begun by
Order of the Supreme Court in Monmouth County in 1999. Since then,
Mercer, Ocean, Somerset, and Union Counties joined the program.
More than a half-million cases from 76 law firms have been filed
using JEFIS since the program began.
Attorneys or litigants who want information on using JEFIS for
electronic filing in the Burlington Courts may contact Jo Anne
Smith, Civil Division manager at 609-518-2815.
