STATEMENT OF THE SUPREME COURT ON THE RETIREMENT OF
ASSOCIATE JUSTICE GARY S. STEIN

The Supreme Court announced today that Associate Justice Gary S. Stein, 68, has informed Governor James E. McGreevey that he will retire effective September 1, 2002. At the time his retirement takes effect, Justice Stein will have served over seventeen-and-a-half years on the Court, the sixth longest tenure in its history.

Justice Stein has written over 365 published opinions during his tenure on the Supreme Court, including more than 220 majority opinions. Through that extensive body of work, Justice Stein has had a significant impact on virtually every area of the law, including education, family, criminal, zoning and land use planning law, as well as civil and criminal procedure and attorney discipline.

“Justice Stein has been a highly respected member of the Supreme Court for many years,” said Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz, who has served with the Justice since her appointment to the Court in 1996. “On countless occasions, his deeply ingrained sense of justice, his insight and intelligence, his meticulous attention to detail, his substantial institutional history, and his inexhaustible supply of energy have been invaluable to the Court. His steadfast commitment to the improvement of urban education is but one example of the effort he has made to improve the quality of life for those who live and work in New Jersey.

“Justice Stein’s strengths have not been limited in their application to the cases that have come before the Court. He has always cared deeply about the proper administration of our judicial system and has worked tirelessly to ensure that the system is fair to litigants, attorneys, judges, and the members of the general public.

“The Court will greatly miss Justice Stein, both on and off the bench. We wish him many healthy and happy years of retirement. He has earned the thanks and deep appreciation of his colleagues and of the people of New Jersey for his faithful and diligent service.”

On his appointment to the Supreme Court by then Governor Thomas H. Kean, Justice Stein took the oath of office on January 11, 1985. He was reappointed in 1992.

Justice Stein and his wife, Et, have been married since 1956. They have five children: Jill, a school teacher; Carrie, a talent agent; Michael, a partner in Pashman Stein Esqs.; Terri, a self-employed attorney; and Jo, an actress. The Steins also have twelve grandchildren.
