Courts Users Invited to Sign Up for Text Alerts About Local Court Closings

Litigants, jurors, attorneys and other court users can sign up to receive text alerts about unscheduled court closings in their area, Judge Glenn A. Grant, acting administrative director of the courts, announced today.

“As we head into the winter season, we want to remind court users that they can receive the latest information about unscheduled court closings on their cell phones,” said Judge Grant. “It’s an easy and convenient way for anyone headed to court to find out right away if the court is closed unexpectedly.”

While the courts have used short message service (SMS) texts to disseminate breaking news, including unscheduled closings, since 2009, the expanded service allows users to receive only text messages about court locations where they do business.

The enhancement was made to accommodate requests from those who did not want to receive texts about every location in the state, particularly when bad whether requires the courts to close multiple locations. Users can now limit the texts they receive to only those counties that are of interest to them.

Users who had signed up previously for SMS texts from the courts must go back to the site and update their profiles to choose the specific locations for which they want to receive texts. The prior system, in which all court closings were sent to all recipients, will be discontinued on Nov. 1.

To sign up for the courts’ text messaging service, go to njcourts.com and click on the SMS logo on the right side of the home page. Once on the SMS page, users can opt to receive text messages for one or more court closings. They also can sign up to receive press releases, notices to the bar, Supreme Court decisions, and newsletters.
