McNair Academic High School Wins the Hudson County Mock Trial Competition
Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School won the 2012 Hudson County Mock Trial Competition held at the Hudson County Administration Building.
Nine high school teams entered the county competition, which was held from Jan. 30 through Feb. 6.
Assignment Judge Peter F. Bariso along with Superior Court Judges Mark A. Baber, Daniel D.’Alessandro, Alvaro L. Iglesias, Martha T. Royster, Lourdes I. Santiago and Barry P. Sarkisian presided over the various rounds of the competition.
This year’s mock trial case was about a fictional high school student who broke into a teacher's house. The jury had to determine whether he was just trying to deliver a math test of his own, on which he admittedly had cheated, or whether the student was there to commit a bias crime by stealing an emblem of the teacher's home country.
The mock trial competition takes place every year during January and February. High school teams are coached by their teachers and by attorneys who volunteer their time to teach the students how to present a case to the court and to jurors. The students assume the roles of prosecutors, public defenders, plaintiffs, defendants and jurors, while judges and attorneys from Hudson County volunteer their time to judge the competition.
