Robert W. Smith Named New Director of Trial Court Services

Acting Administrative Director Judge Glenn A. Grant today named Robert W. Smith director of Trial Court Services for the New Jersey Judiciary. He succeeds John P. McCarthy Jr., who recently retired.

Mr. Smith will oversee the Judiciary's five case management divisions, criminal, civil, family, municipal and probation, in addition to the automated trial court services and the programs and procedures units. He will play a critical role in strategic planning and project implementation and monitoring for the Judiciary and will work closely with other senior managers to ensure the smooth operation of the courts.

"Bob Smith is not only a seasoned manager but also an innovator," said Judge Grant. "He led a number of technology initiatives that have resulted in improved service and greater efficiency in our courts. I am confident he will provide the leadership and expertise the courts will need to continuously improve our services as we weather the current economic crisis."

Mr. Smith, 51, joined the Judiciary in 1975, working in the mail room of the Middlesex County Superior Court while attending high school. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1980 from Rutgers University and in 1996 earned a designation as a certified public manager.

"I am deeply gratified to be given the opportunity to lead trial court services and to work with so many accomplished and dedicated people here at the AOC and in the vicinages," said Mr. Smith. "This is not an easy time for the courts, but it is a time of great opportunity to find innovative solutions to the challenges we are facing and to rededicate ourselves to providing excellent service to the public."

Mr. Smith joined the Administrative Office of the Courts, the central management office of the state's unified court system, in 1986 as an information technology analyst. In 1988, he was named assistant chief of the court automation section in the Municipal Court Services Division, and was later named chief of the automated traffic system/automated complaint system (ATS/ACS) support unit in 1999. As manager of the ATC/ACS support unit, Mr. Smith led the courts' efforts to create NJMCDirect, the statewide online ticket payment system that remains a national leader in providing fast and convenient service to court users. In 2003, he was named assistant director of Municipal Court Services and has served in that role until being named director.

Mr. Smith lives in Monmouth Junction with his wife, Judi, and his daughter, Allyson.
