State's Judges to Preside over Mock Trials

New Jersey's state and municipal judges once again will dedicate their time and expertise to the statewide mock trial program sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation (NJSBF), today announced Judge Philip S. Carchman, acting administrative director of the courts. The judges will join many of the state's attorneys to preside over local, county, regional and statewide competitions.

In the preliminary rounds, which are cosponsored by each of the county bar associations, teams from each participating high school compete against each other as they play various courtroom roles, including prosecutors, defendants, attorneys, witnesses, and jurors, in a fictional court case developed by the NJSBF. Winners at the county level then will proceed to the regional, semi-final and final competitions, which will be held at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square, New Brunswick.

This year's state champions will compete in the American Mock Trial Invitational, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from May 18-20. Last year's state winner was Middle Township High School in Cape May County.

"I want to commend the dozens of judges, as well as attorneys around the state, who participate in the mock trial program. This is a hands-on introduction to our legal system and a great educational opportunity for our youth. I know our judges find it to be a rewarding experience as well," said Judge Carchman.

Here is the scenario on which this year's mock trial is based:

Prep school swim coach and former Olympic star "Doc" Fisher faces charges of aggravated and reckless manslaughter in connection with the death of his/her child, Chris Fisher, a promising 16-year-old swimmer. Chris died after using a performance-enhancing drug.

A schedule of regional and statewide events is attached. For information on local competitions, please call the Office of Communications.
