Chief Justice Rabner to Speak at Volunteer Events

New Jersey Chief Justice Stuart Rabner will offer thanks on behalf of the Judiciary to approximately 500 long-time volunteers who have served on the state’s district ethics committees, today announced David E. Johnson Jr., director of the Supreme Court's Office of Attorney Ethics.

The Chief Justice’s remarks will be delivered at two receptions, one for volunteers from North Jersey and one for volunteers from South and Central Jersey.  The northern reception will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marriott Glenpointe in Teaneck.  The south/central reception will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the War Memorial in Trenton.

Also attending to honor the service of the volunteers will be representatives from the Disciplinary Review Board, which reviews all recommendations for discipline from the district committees; the Disciplinary Oversight Committee, which has oversight and budget responsibilities for the disciplinary system; and members of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

The 17 district ethics committees are responsible for investigating and prosecuting grievances filed against attorneys.  The committees are supported and overseen by the OAE.  Final discipline is imposed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, which reviews sanctions recommended from below.

The OAE maintains a comprehensive Web site, which can be accessed through the Judiciary Web site at njcourtsonline.com.  Clients wishing to file a grievance can call the automated OAE hotline at 1-800-406-8594.  Callers need to enter the attorney’s office zip code to receive contact information for the secretary of the appropriate district committee.

Reporters and photographers wishing to cover these events may call the Office of Communications at 609-292-9580 to make arrangements.
