Superior Court Judge Assumes Management Role in Jersey City Municipal Court
Hudson Vicinage Assignment Judge Maurice J. Gallipoli today announced that Chief Justice Stuart Rabner has signed an order assigning Judge Sheila A. Venable of the Hudson Vicinage Superior Court to serve on a temporary basis as the chief judge of the Jersey City Municipal Court.
Currently assigned to the Criminal Division of the Hudson Vicinage, Judge Venable will take on the new assignment in addition to her regular Superior Court assignment in accordance with the cross assignment authority provided for in the general assignment order. She will assume her new responsibilities on Oct. 9.
The appointment was made as a consequence of the resignation of Jersey City Chief Judge Wanda Molina and in light of ongoing investigations into possible irregularities in the Jersey City Municipal Court with the handling of some parking tickets.
“As a former judge of Jersey City Municipal Court, Judge Venable brings a wealth of experience to this assignment,” said Judge Gallipoli. “An experienced and hard-working jurist, Judge Venable will ensure that the court functions properly and efficiently.”
Judge Venable first served Jersey City as an assistant public defender from 1988 to 1991. In 1991 she became the first woman to serve as Jersey City’s chief municipal prosecutor and in 1992 she was named a municipal court judge. She served in that capacity until her appointment to the Superior Court in January 2005.
