Monmouth Vicinage Participates in Mock Trial Program

Freehold, NJ - The Superior Court of New Jersey, Monmouth Vicinage, is proud to announce its participation in the 2006-2007 Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition.

This year's mock trial inspired one of the strongest turnouts of volunteer judges and attorneys since the inception of the program in Monmouth County. Several Monmouth Vicinage judges, in conjunction with approximately 75 members of the Monmouth Bar Association, dedicated their time to perform as judges and coaches during the competition.

"This is an important event that will benefit the students of our community," Assignment Judge Lawrence M. Lawson stated. "It is gratifying to know that so many members of our judicial staff have volunteered their free time to educate our students on the judicial process and the rule of law. In so doing, they will have an important positive influence on the paths that these students will take both in their careers and their lives."

This year, Monmouth County had one of the highest high school participation rates in the state, with 24 private and public schools competing in the mock trials. The final round of the competition for Monmouth will be held Thursday, Feb. 8 at 4:30 p.m. at the Monmouth County Courthouse.

Judge Louis F. Locascio will preside over the county finals. "The mock trial program is not only valuable to students who wish to pursue a legal career; it will inspire self-confidence and respect for the court system in all students who participate. The mock trials allow the students to take an active role and gain a better understanding of court proceedings," said Judge Locascio.

The preliminary mock trials, sponsored by the 21 county bar associations, set student teams from local high schools against each other as they play various roles such as plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, witnesses, and jurors in a fictional court case designed by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. Winners of the county finals will advance to the statewide semi-finals held at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square, New Brunswick on Feb. 13.
