If spring comes, can Law Day be far behind? Instituted by the American Bar Association (ABA) 46 years ago, Law Day (May 1) is observed throughout New Jersey by the Judiciary in partnership with county bar associations.

A special day set aside to focus on the American heritage of liberty under law, Law Day was officially designated by a joint resolution of Congress in 1961. The event has grown over the years, with many counties hosting activities throughout the month of May. This year’s theme is, “Celebrate Your Freedom—Independent Courts Protect Our Liberties.”

Events for thousands of New Jersey school children include mock trials, musical presentations, essay and poster contests, guest speakers, exhibitions and tours. Many of these events are open to the public.

Agendas for many county Law Day programs are featured on the Judiciary’s Web site. Information on other county’s activities or details about the events noted online may be obtained by contacting the respective county courthouse.
