Public Hearing on the Rules of Professional Conduct

The New Jersey Supreme Court has appointed the Commission on the Rules of Professional Conduct to review the rules (RPCs) in light of the report of the American Bar Association's Commission on Evaluation of the Rules of Professional Conduct. The Court has directed this Commission to make recommendations on the proposed RPCs and on issues regarding multijurisdictional and multidisciplinary practice, the retention of the "appearance-of-impropriety rule," and the extension of the disqualification of a municipal prosecutor from criminal defense work to members and associates in theprosecutor's law firm. The Court also has asked this Commission to study the bona fide office requirements of Rule 1:21-1(a) and recommend whether they should be retained, modified or deleted.

Through this notice and its preliminary report, the Commission undertakes to inform the profession and the public of its work thus far.

Location of Public Hearing:

Tuesday, May 21, 2002, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the annual State Bar Association meeting, Tropicana Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

If you are interested in making a presentation to the Commission, please register by May 10, 2002, by writing to Keith M. Endo, Counsel to the Commission, Hughes Justice Complex, PO Box 037, Trenton, N.J. 08625.

Presentations will be limited to ten minutes. Please submit any position papers accompanying your presentation to Mr. Endo at the above address by May 10th. The Commission will also accept written materials without an accompanying oral presentation. Late registrants will be heard if time permits and after the other registrants have been heard. Please be advised that all statements submitted to the Commission, whether oral or in writing, will not be treated as confidential.
