Litigation was filed against tobacco manufacturers and others for injuries and damages allegedly caused by the use of tobacco products. All cases, except one involving light cigarettes, have been resolved.
By Order of the Supreme Court dated October 14, 1997, all tobacco cases statewide were originally assigned to the Middlesex vicinage for centralized case management by the Hon. Marina Corodemus . As a result of the disability retirement of Judge Corodemus, by Order of Chief Justice Poritz dated October 1, 2004, the remaining case was reassigned to the Hon. Bryan Garruto. That case, Stern v. Philip Morris Inc., et al. MID-L-2584-03, was removed to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in June 2003. On February 13, 2004 the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey remanded the case back to Middlesex County Superior Court.
