Welcome to jury duty. Jurors serve an indispensable function in civil and criminal trials. The jury system in this country is constitutionally mandated and serves to protect and promote the rights of civil litigants and criminal defendants.

Failure to Report

Jurors who fail to report as summoned are subject to a $500 fine or may be punished for contempt of court.

Courtroom Regulations

  • Cell phones, pagers and electronic devices must be turned off.
  • You are not permitted to read newspapers or other materials.
  • You are not permitted to bring food or beverages into the courtroom.

If You Are Selected As A Juror

  • The trial judge will instruct you regarding the trial schedule and reporting times.
  • You must wear your juror badge at all times including during lunch.

Other Factors Relating to Your Juror Service

  • The Sussex County Judicial Center is located in Newton on High St. near Spring St. and Park Place -- one block from Main St. (Rt. 206).
  • Jurors may park in the parking deck located next to the Judicial Center . The deck is entered from High St . (Rt. 94).
  • Petit Jurors will receive $5.00 a day for the first three days after which they will receive $40.00 a day.
  • Checks are processed every Friday in Trenton and will be received within three weeks.
  • Jurors whose service is rescheduled will receive verification of their new summons date.
  • The Juror Assembly Room is located on the first floor of the Judicial Center. Complimentary coffee and tea are provided in our Jurors' Assembly Room.
  • Wireless internet access is available.

Smoking Policy

The courthouse is a non-smoking facility. Jurors may smoke in the outdoor area adjacent to the Juror Assembly Room.

Employment Protection

N.J.S.A . 2B:20-17 protects jurors from employment related retaliation. There are both criminal and civil sanctions. Jury service will not affect unemployment benefits.

Term of Service

Petit jurors' term of service is two days. You must call the recorded message number or check the website after 5:00 p.m. each evening prior to your service to see if you must report. If you are selected during jury selection to sit as a trial juror, you must remain for the duration of jury selection and the trial. Once your service is completed, you may request to be excused if summoned again within three years.
