Message From Assignment Judge Travis L. Francis

Welcome to jury service. Jurors are an essential and indispensable part of our justice system. In our country, the jury system is a constitutional mandate, which, as part of our Bill of Rights, protects the rights of both civil litigants and criminal defendants.

Note: This same reporting message is available by calling 732-519-3402 after 5:00 p.m. the night before your scheduled appearance. If the reporting message is not available both here and on the telephone, you must report to the courthouse at 8:00 a.m.

Failure to Report

Jurors who fail to report as summoned are subject to penalties, including fines and imprisonment. Call the jury office at 732-519-3200 x2 if you have any questions regarding your jury service.

Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Policy

Please advise the Jury Manager at 732-519-3472 if you require an accommodation in order to serve. If you are hearing impaired, please call 732-519-3432 for TTY service.

Dress Code

Jurors must wear clothing appropriate for an appearance in court. Shorts, T-shirts and clothing with statements or offensive symbols are not permitted. In addition, work uniforms, including police uniforms, should not be worn.

Courtroom Regulations

  • Cell phones, pagers and electronic devices must be turned off in the courtroom.
  • Reading materials such as newspapers, books and magazines are not permitted in the courtroom.
  • You are not permitted to bring food or beverages into the courtroom.

If You Are Selected As A Juror

  • The trial judge will instruct you regarding the trial schedule, reporting times and recesses. The judge's instructions will take precedence over any general instructions given in the jury assembly area.
  • You must wear your juror badge at all times, including during lunch.

Jury Fees

  • You will receive compensation for your service beginning at a rate of $5.00 per day for the first three days and $40.00 per day for each day thereafter. Full-time State employees, municipal employees, and those employed by a school district will not receive payment since they will continue to receive their regular pay.
  • Juror payroll is processed weekly so if your service extends across multiple weeks you will receive a separate check for each week. Payroll ends on Thursday; therefore, your attendance on Friday will be included in the following week's check.

Smoking Policy

The courthouse is a non-smoking facility. You may smoke outside the main entrance. Please sign out at the main desk before you leave the jury assembly room.

Employment Protection

Please be aware that N.J.S.A. 2B:20-17 protects jurors from employment related retaliation and provides for the possibility of both criminal and civil sanctions.

Term of Service

Petite jurors are required to serve for one day or one trial. If you are selected to serve on a trial, you must remain for the duration of jury selection and the trial. Once your service is completed, you will not be eligible to be selected again for three years.

Directions to parking decks nearest the Middlesex County Courthouse

The Wellness Plaza Deck is located on Paterson Street down the block from the Middlesex County Courthouse (Criminal and Civil courts).The New Street Deck is located on New Street next to the Family Courthouse. If you are coming for jury duty, you are permitted to park at no cost in either of the two noted decks, however, be sure to bring the parking deck ticket with you to the Jury Office so it may be validated. Also please note that all jurors report to the Main Courthouse located on Paterson Street, the entrance for jurors is on the Bayard Street side of the Courthouse across the street from the New Brunswick City Hall.

From Livingston Ave. – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Make a left onto New Street. Follow New Street to the 1st traffic light and make a right onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 2nd traffic light and make a right onto Paterson Street. The Wellness Plaza Deck is immediately on the left.  – To the New Street Deck: Turn right onto New Street, go 1.5 blocks and you will find the entrance to the New Street Deck on the left.

From Rt. 18N – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take the New Street exit off Rt. 18 and go to the 4th traffic light and make a right onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 2nd traffic light and make a right onto Paterson Street. The entrance to the Wellness Plaza Deck is immediately on the left. - To the New Street Deck: Take the New Street exit off Rt. 18 and go through 3 traffic lights. After the third traffic light travel an additional 1.5 blocks and you will find the entrance to the New Street Deck on the left.

From Rt. 18S – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take the New Street exit off Rt. 18 and make a right onto New Street. Go to the 4th traffic light and make a right onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 2nd traffic light and make a right onto Paterson Street. The entrance to the Wellness Plaza Deck is immediately on the left. – To the New Street Deck: Take the New Street exit and make a right onto New Street. After going through three (3) traffic lights travel an additional 1.5 blocks and you will find the entrance to the New Street Deck on the left.

From Rt. 27S – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take Rt. 27 South towards New Brunswick. Once you pass over the Raritan River from Highland Park into New Brunswick go to the 5th traffic light and make a left onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 1st traffic light and make a left onto Paterson Street. The entrance to the Wellness Plaza Deck is immediately on your left. – To the New Street Deck: After crossing over the Raritan River and into New Brunswick go to the 5th traffic light and make a left onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Go to the 3rd traffic light and make a left onto New Street, the entrance to the New Street Deck will be immediately on the right.

From Rt.27N – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take Rt. 27 North into New Brunswick and make a right onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 1st traffic light and make a left onto Paterson Street.
The entrance to the Wellness Plaza Deck is immediately on the left. – To the New Street Deck: Take Rt. 27 into New Brunswick and make a right onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 3rd traffic light and make a left onto New Street, the entrance to the New Street Deck will be immediately on the right.

From Easton Ave. (Rt. 287) – To the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take Easton Ave. to the end in downtown New Brunswick (New Brunswick Train Station will be on your left) and turn right onto French Street (Rt. 27 South). Follow French Street to the 1st traffic light and make a left onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 1st traffic light and make a left onto Paterson Street. The Wellness Plaza Deck will be immediately on the left. – To the New Street Deck: Take Easton Ave. to the end in New Brunswick (New Brunswick Train Station will be on the left) and turn right onto French Street (RT. 27 South). Follow French Street to the 1st traffic light and make a left onto Joyce Kilmer Ave. Follow Joyce Kilmer Ave. to the 3rd traffic light and make a left onto New Street, the entrance to the New Street Deck will be immediately on the right. 

Over-sized vehicles – The Paterson Street Deck should be used for over-sized vehicles, however, please check to be sure your particular vehicle will fit.

Walking directions – From the Wellness Plaza Deck: Take the elevator to the first/ground floor. As you exit the building (Fresh Grocer is on ground level) you will be on Kirkpatrick Street. If you are appearing for jury duty, proceed two (2) blocks to Bayard Street. Make a left onto Bayard Street and proceed a half block to the juror entrance to the Courthouse (located across the street from the New Brunswick City Hall).
If you are going to the Main Courthouse for reasons other than jury duty (Civil or Criminal matter) once you exit the Wellness Plaza Deck (Fresh Grocer) proceed up Kirkpatrick Street one block to Paterson Street. Follow Paterson Street one block the entrance to the Courthouse will be on the right just before the next cross street.

If you are going to the Family Courthouse and you parked in the Wellness Plaza Deck take Kirkpatrick Street three (3) blocks to New Street the Family Courthouse is on the opposite side of the street.

If you park in the New Street Deck and are going to the Family Courthouse the deck is located immediately next to the Family Courthouse. If you are going to the Main Courthouse (Civil or Criminal) proceed out of the New Street Deck to the right and over to Kirkpatrick Street. Follow Kirkpatrick Street three (3) blocks to Paterson Street. Make a right onto Paterson Street and proceed to the end of the block to the entrance of the Courthouse.
