Howard H. Berchtold Jr., trial court administrator (TCA) for the Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage, recently was presented with the Institute for Court Management (ICM) Fellow Star Award at the annual National Association of Court Management conference in San Antonio, Texas. The award is presented annually to recognize an ICM Fellow who demonstrates excellence in the advancement of court administration through leadership and education.
Berchtold has served in the New Jersey Judiciary for 32 years, holding various management positions.
In March 2006, he was named TCA, overseeing a vicinage with 42 judges and more than 600 staff members.
As the highest ranking staff executive in Atlantic and Cape May counties, Berchtold is in charge of all court operations, including financial management, human resources, information systems, case management, probation services, jury utilization, facilities, equipment, records management, community outreach and statistical analysis.
In receiving the award, Berchtold said, “Justice is the bedrock of the incredible work that we do. Our challenge and mandate as managers is to anticipate and implement whatever is necessary to ensure equal access to justice. I am so proud of our court system and I am humbled by this honor.”
Assignment Judge Julio L. Mendez congratulated Berchtold, saying, “Howard is passionate about our court system and every day he lives up the core principles of the Judiciary. I cannot think of someone more deserving of this recognition.”
