Online Resources Regarding Continuing Legal Education for Attorneys Now Available

A new page on the Judiciary Web site, njcourts.com, contains important information for attorneys regarding the mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) required of all New Jersey attorneys, according to Mark Neary, clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court.

As of Jan. 1, 2010, all New Jersey attorneys are required to obtain 24 credit hours of CLE every two years during their careers. The Web page contains information on amended Court Rule 1:42, which outlines the CLE requirement. Also on the page are answers to questions frequently asked by attorneys and by CLE providers on what constitutes CLE for the purpose of the court rule, who can provide CLE and how CLE credits should be documented and reported.

“This site provides answers to many of the questions we have received from attorneys and providers seeking guidance on how to follow the amended court rule,” Neary said “We hope that anyone with questions will check the Web page first for easy and convenient access to almost any of the information they might need to comply with the new rule.”

The Supreme Court oversees all aspects of attorney licensing, practice and discipline for the state’s 85,000 registered attorneys. The amended court rule replaces the previous skills and methods course, which was the only education required of licensed attorneys.

In addition to the Web site, the Board on Continuing Legal Education can be reached by phone at 609-633-9733 or by e-mail at sctcle.mailbox@judiciary.state.nj.us.
