Public librarians in the Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperative attended a training session on Feb. 3 at the Spring Lake Public Library in Spring Lake, Monmouth County.
The session covered how to access the many resources available on the Judiciary’s Web site, njcourts.com, including forms, publications and court information.
The cooperative serves Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Janie Rodriguez, and Ann Marie Fleury, ombudsman for the Morris/Sussex and Ocean vicinages, respectively, conducted the 3- hour session. The session also included information about the ombudsman program and an overview of basic legal research methods.
Judiciary ombudsmen serve the public statewide, providing procedural assistance to court users and self-represented litigants in navigating the sometimes confusing court process.
The Judiciary’s Web site includes many useful resources for court users.
Those who do not have a computer at home or are unaware of these resources can seek assistance at their local public library. Training library staff about these resources enhances access to the courts and helps ensure that litigants receive the information and assistance they need.
The Feb 3 session was the most recent in a series of sessions for public librarians. A session was held on Oct. 7 at the Hasbrouck Heights Public Library in Hasbrouck Heights, Bergen County, for the members of the Highlands Regional Library Cooperative.
The cooperative serves Bergen; Hunterdon; Morris; Passaic; Somerset; Sussex and Warren counties.
The Highlands Regional session was presented with the assistance of Aime Alonzo-Serrano, ombudsman for the Somerset/Hunterdon/Warren vicinage, Jennifer Shultis, ombudsman for the Bergen vicinage, and June Zieder, ombudsman for the Passaic vicinage.
Other sessions were held last year for Morris County Library reference librarians in Morristown and for Sussex County reference librarians in Newton.
