Mental Health
The Hudson Vicinage is the only vicinage in the State that
has a dedicated mental health unit. This unit is staffed by a Senior Probation
Officer and a State certified mental health screener who is provided by the
Jersey City Medical Center.
This unit provides the courts with mental health assessments
on defendants suspected of suffering from mental illnesses. Assessments are
also provided on certain defendants awaiting sentence or pending bail. If a
defendant requires immediate hospitalization the screener can make that
determination without delay.
