SUPERVISION SERVICES

The Adult and Juvenile Probation Units provide supervision of probationers and those individuals ordered by the courts to pay fines, restitution or penalties.
Probation Officers determine the intensity of supervision based upon the systematic analysis of risks posed to the community and individual needs presented by the probationer. Officers provide counseling and referral services to offenders with employment, educational, substance abuse, psychological and other needs.
Adult and Juvenile Probation personnel maintain a liaison with the many and varied programs throughout New Jersey, and in other states, which offer services for offenders. Staff serves on advisory boards, planning committees and training boards in an effort to keep current regarding available resources and to encourage and promote local development.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

The Community Service Program functions as a separate unit while working closely with Adult and Juvenile Supervision Units. The program has experienced rapid growth in the vicinage due to public and judicial support of community service as a sanction and an increasing number of offenses which require community service. The law mandates community service for certain drug offenses. In addition, motor vehicle statutes require community service for violations of automobile insurance laws. Community service and incarceration is mandatory in second and subsequent driving under the influence offenses.

To minimize risk to the community and for the protection of placement agencies, the following types of offenders are normally excluded from the program:

  • Offenders without a stable place of residence.
  • Offenders unable to complete community service tasks because of physical disabilities.
  • Chronic alcohol and/or drug abusers requiring immediate treatment.

There are several hundred non-profit, service oriented or taxpayer funded agencies available to receive the services of the program.
Those sentenced to perform community service are covered by a secondary medical expense insurance policy.

CHILD SUPPORT ENFORCEMENT

The mandate of the Child Support Enforcement Unit is to enforce support orders of the court, provide payment history, and monitor and enforce delinquent support cases.
Currently, there are 27,000 support cases under supervision in the vicinage. Annual collections of $100 million go directly to support the children and families of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.
