Message from the Presiding Judge
Welcome to the Essex Vicinage Family Part website. As the Presiding Judge of the Family Part, it is my pleasure to communicate with you on court operations and the many programs and activities occurring in this court. For those of you who are unaware, the Essex Family Court is the largest in the State of New Jersey. We lead the state in filings with 41,099 total filings in court year 2012/2013 which ended June 30, 2013. Success handling this many cases would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of judges, employees and other institutional partners and volunteers who work with the Court.
On these pages you will find important information on the various case types handled by our court together with contacts and links to other websites of interest. We are proud to be a part of the award winning New Jersey Judiciary Website ranked first among all state judiciary websites and fourth internationally in a study of more than 900 court-related websites conducted by the firm Justice Served.
It has been said that the Family Court is the most important court within any court system. Nowhere is this more evident than in the state of New Jersey. The issues confronting the judges and staff that comprise this division are more complex and demanding than any other division in the State judiciary system. We see families at their most vulnerable times and we must oftentimes protect children from being harmed by parents or caregivers.
The purpose of this website is to inform and educate you about the services available in our court. Our continuing goal and aspiration is to be the best family court in the State system. The extraordinary number of filings and the complexity of the issues in our division require employees of special talents and creativity. Partnering with many groups and stakeholders, we come together regularly in committees, subcommittees and working groups to discuss issues and problems and devise workable solutions.
Much of the work in the Family Court is done by volunteers, citizens of Essex County who receive no monetary reward, but put in endless hours of service for children and families. Volunteers play very active roles in the Supervised Visitation Program, Juvenile Conference Committees, the Juvenile Auto Theft Prevention Program and the Child Placement Review Boards. Without their assistance, the work of the court would be more onerous. Our volunteers are motivated by desire to give back to the community, in particular to the children. We cannot thank them enough and ask you to consider joining one of the volunteer committees.
We are striving to be the best Family Court and we are constantly seeking to improve ourselves. This self-analysis is not possible without your help and cooperation. We ask you to explore these web pages and invite you to submit any comments or suggestions on how we can continue to strive to reach our goal of being the best family court in the State.
Honorable Sallyanne Floria
