The Administrative Office of the Courts, Criminal Practice Division
provides support to all local Criminal Division Judges and Staff. It
consists of the Criminal Court Services Unit, Sentencing/Legal Unit, Research/Statistical Unit
and the Drug Court Unit. The Criminal Court Services Unit generally tracks
and reports on case movement, helping to ensure the constitutional right to a speedy trial is preserved.
It also applies for and administers grant programs, provides training to vicinage staff and
judges, monitors compliance with statewide case processing standards, and responds to general
public inquiries. The Sentencing/Legal Unit generally provides support to
sentencing judges, oversees and reports on a Death Penalty project which compares the cases
of all defendants sentenced to death in New Jersey to assure fair and equal treatment. It compiles
and distributes sample criminal jury charges, or instructions judges provide to juries, and
provides training on all matters related to sentencing. The Research/Statistical Unit
provides support to Judges, Managers and other State and Federal agencies by creating, producing, maintaining
and analyzing statistical reports and programs. The Unit also maintains the Criminal Practice computer systems
which track statewide data on several application platforms. The Drug Court Unit provides assistance to vicinage
drug courts through development of statewide standards and guidelines, training and education for judges
and staff, technical support, coordination of activities with other divisions and agencies, and
centralization of administrative activities such as statistical analysis. |
