Mediation
The municipal courts have volunteer mediators from countywide mediations organizations. In Atlantic County the mediators are from Community Mediation Services and in Cape May County the mediators are from Cape Mediation, Inc. Municipal court judges may order minor disputes to mediation before scheduling a trial. A minor dispute is a one where a private citizen has filed or seeks to file a complaint. The case types that may not go to mediation are:
- Serious injury
- Repeated acts of violence between the same people
- A clearly demonstrated psychological or emotional disability of someone
- Cases involving a pending Superior Court case between the same persons
- Domestic violence matters
- Traffic complaints
- Penalty enforcement matters
